How to Build Relationships Through Assessment

Assessments don’t have to feel formal or disconnected from the heart of teaching. In fact, baseline and formative assessments can be powerful opportunities to build trust, connection, and deeper understanding between teachers and students.

In her edWebinar “Boost Engagement, Belonging, and Regulation with Music and Movement,” educator Alexia Pendleton emphasized the importance of starting the year with intentional routines that build community and confidence. Thoughtful and intentional assessment can be one of those routines.

Here’s how assessment practices, especially with tools like ESGI, support relationship-building in the classroom.

One-on-one time builds trust

When you sit down individually with a student, it sends a message: I see you. You matter. These moments create a space where students feel heard and supported. Even quick 1:1 ESGI assessments become a form of quality time that builds rapport.

Data helps you know the whole child

Assessment data doesn’t just tell you what students can’t do. It helps uncover strengths, patterns, and potential. ESGI lets you see beyond surface-level performance, so you can support each learner with empathy and accuracy.

Celebrating progress builds confidence

With real-time results, you can immediately show students how they’re growing. Pointing out their improvement (“You knew 3 letters last week—today you got 8!”) fosters a growth mindset and helps build self-worth.

Better communication with families

When you know your students well, you can communicate clearly with their families. That relationship triangle (student-teacher-family) strengthens the student’s support network. ESGI even helps you share assessment results in home languages, so every family stays in the loop.

When used intentionally, assessment isn’t just about numbers—it’s about relationships. ESGI gives you the tools to streamline the process, so you can spend less time analyzing data and more time connecting with the learners behind it.
