Get Your Students on Track: Closing Learning Gaps

Every teacher starts the new year with goals of getting their students on track and closing learning gaps, but where is this magic wand where you get more time back in your day to achieve this? What’s the secret spell to brew up more support and resources?

While we don’t have a magic potion up our sleeve, we do have an easy three-step solution. Here are three steps to get your students on track with the help of ESGI:

Step One: Assess students using tests that align with your scope and sequence

If you’re a teacher without ESGI, you know how difficult and time consuming it can be to find or create assessments that align with your scope and sequence.

If you’re a teacher with ESGI, you know how easy it is to choose from over 2,500 pre-made assessments to align with your scope and sequence, or adjust the pre-made assessments to fit your specific criteria.

Simply navigate to the test explorer, filter for your subject, then use the filtering tools to the left of the results to find the perfect assessments for you.

Pro tip: Your district administrator can use their free ESGI Administrator account to choose the assessments that align with your scope and sequence and publish them out to the whole grade to make it even easier for teachers.

Step Two: Use Item Analysis to find gaps and inform grouping

Once you have your assessments chosen and rolled out, it’s time to put your results to work. But what’s the best way to analyze and act on the data?

ESGI makes it easy to discover common gaps and groups with the Item Analysis Report.

The bar graphs in the Item Analysis tool show you which questions were mastered, and which concepts need to be revisited. They also allow you to identify small groups of students with similar results to tailor your instruction, which brings us to our final step to get students back on track.

Pro tip: Download the excel spreadsheet and your groups are already made for you in the 2nd tab!

Step Three: Group students by skill level for targeted intervention or extension activities

Grouping based on test results allows teachers to offer targeted remediation. It can also allow you to create challenging environments for high-achieving students.

But creating your groups can be difficult if you’re swimming in a sea of data post-assessment. Thankfully, ESGI makes this process easy with the student grouping function.

Once you have grouped your students with similar skill levels, you’ll be able to address specific learning needs and challenges more effectively.
